This referral was made without encountering any objections.
In 1974 the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 3237 acknowledging the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as an observer member.
In November 2012, the General Assembly passed a resolution giving the State of Palestine the status of an observer member.
This year the Palestinian Permanent Observer Mission submitted a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, urging the UN to reconsider Palestine's application to join as an official member.
Vanessa Frazier, the Ambassador of Malta, which currently holds the presidency of the Security Council in April, said discussions regarding Palestine's membership will take place this month.
Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour called it a historic moment.
