Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong submits resignation, incoming PM Lawrence Wong reveals cabinet lineup

(VOVWORLD) -Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday submitted his resignation to President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and said that he and his government will end their term on Wednesday. 

In the letter, Lee nominated Lawrence Wong, 51, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, to replace him as Prime Minister from Wednesday, starting the fourth generation of leaders of Singapore.

The President accepted Lee's resignation and said he would appoint Wong as Prime Minister and invite him to form a new government.

The same day, Singapore's incoming Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced a minor cabinet reshuffle. Trade Minister Gan Kim Yong, 65, will be assigned the additional responsibility of deputy prime minister. He will also take on the role as chair of the board of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Two years ago, Lawrence Wong was selected as the leader of the fourth generation group of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) in Singapore, paving the way for him to become the country's next Prime Minister.
