(VOVworld) - Senior diplomats from South Korea, the United States, and Japan on Thursday discussed slapping joint sanctions on North Korea over its latest nuclear test and working together to respond to Pyongyang's future military provocations.

Yonhap news agency reported that at the tripartite meeting in Tokyo, the vice foreign ministers of South Korea, the US, and Japan agreed to work for the pushing of a powerful UN Security Council resolution over North Korea's fifth nuclear test in September.

The trilateral meeting reportedly also delved into adopting independent sanctions by the three countries.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Shinsuke Sugiyama said the leaders had agreed to work with each other to increase the pressure on North Korea, forcing it to give up its nuclear and missile development programs towards denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Also that day, an officer in the Korean Defense Ministry said Seoul had decided to resume negotiations with Japan on an agreement to share military and intelligence information to deal with threats from North Korea.
