South Korea, US seek ways to rein in North Korea
(VOVWORLD) - South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday called for coordinated efforts by the international community to peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, stressing the need to implement UN sanctions to bring Pyongyang back to the negotiating table.

At a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York, President Moon asked the UN Chief to help resolve the North Korean nuclear issue fundamentally, comprehensively, and peacefully.
The same day, Japan’s Foreign Minister Taro Kono and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov pledged to work together and within the UN Security Council to address the threat from North Korea. Japan urged Russia to use its influence on North Korea.
Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary James Mattis mentioned military options for dealing with the North Korean nuclear threat but refused to explain further. He said it has not been necessary to shoot down any of North Korea’s missiles — including the two that recently flew over Japan, but if a North Korean missile were to threaten US or Japanese territory, it would elicit a different response from Washington.
