Sudan was plunged into crisis in 2019 when Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir was removed by the military after months of anti-government protests against his three-decade rule.

The military under the leadership of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan conducted a coup on October 25, 2021 and arrested Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. He was reinstated in November, 2021.

But protests continued and protest organizers demanded that the General honor his commitment to lead the country to a comprehensive democracy.
