Switzerland helps Vietnam apply remote-sensing technology in rice production
(VOVWORLD) - The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation will provide non-refundable aid worth 370,000 USD for the project Remote Sensing-based Information and Insurance for Crops in Emerging Economies – third phase (RIICE 3).

An agreement to this effect was signed by the Swiss agency and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Hanoi on Wednesday.
The funding accounts for 82% of the project’s total value.
The project allows the use of free satellite signals to collect data, such as mapping and productivity of crops, to enable rice production monitoring. Such information can help rice producers better manage risks, including drought, flood, and salt intrusion.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh said: “I believe that the third phase will be a success given the two previous successful phases and support from Switzerland and other partners. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will do all it can to make the project a success.”
Swiss Ambassador to Vietnam Beatrice Maser Mallor said with cutting-edge technologies, such as remote sensing and cloud computing, agricultural agencies can help improve rice production efficiency and natural disaster risk management. Ambassador Mallor stressed the importance of this phase to integrate the project into the system of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and aid the Ministry’s insurance program which was approved by the Prime Minister late June.
