Twelve candidates are running, including economists, businessmen and a former Syrian Cabinet minister. Speaking to the press, a member of the Syrian National Coalition said that the main functions of the interim government would be to control the situation, provide electricity, water and communication, and assure the safety of the people. A member of Syria’s government said that opposition forces were pursuing foreign interests and trying to destabilize Syria from the inside. The US and the UN do not favor the idea of the establishment of an interim government controlled by the opposition, saying that the focus should be on a political transition. Though the opposition said that the interim government was a solution to more than 2 years of conflict in Syria, analysts said that the meeting could mean an end to any political solution, and push Syria ever deeper into bloody civil war.
