(VOVWORLD) -The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on Wednesday evening inaugurated the Hung Kings Temple, which shows tradition of drinking water, remembering its source and commemorates the merits of the Hung Kings, legendary founders of the Vietnamese nation.

Addressing the opening ceremony, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the Hung Kings Worshiping Belief has become a profound cultural identity, a sustainable traditional morality that has been continued for generations of Vietnamese people, and a manifestation of respect and gratitude of generations of descendants for the merits of their ancestors in building and defending the country.
Praying for the national ancestors to bless the nation carries a profound meaning of cohesion, love, and mutual care of the Vietnamese community, he said.
The inauguration of the Hung Kings Temple in Can Tho affirms the independence and self-reliance of the Vietnamese nation, the President said, calling for Can Tho city do a good job of managing, preserving and promoting the Temple of the Hung Kings.
Construction of the 5.6 million USD temple began in the middle of 2019 and the project spans more than 3.9 hectares. The 19.5 m high main temple is characterized by a stylized bronze drum image of 18 bows, representing the 18 Hung Kings. The temple is surrounded by a lake and in the lake there are 54 cylindrical columns forming a circle that symbolizes the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam.
