The exchange of gunfire has raised the tension. Colonel R K Palta, spokesperson for the Indian Army in Jammu, said the Pakistani army violated the ceasefire and used automatic weapons and mortar shells to target Indian plantations in Hamirpur. Indian soldiers had to shoot back. At a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last month, the two countries’ Prime Ministers agreed to ease tensions along the LOC as a first step towards peace in the region.
