Tension rises on Korean peninsula
Tension is rising on the Korean peninsula after both Koreas exchanged fire at each other’s disputed water territory on Monday.
(VOVworld) – The South Korea’s Defense Ministry reported Monday that about 100 shells fired by North Korea landed in the Yellow Sea south of the Northern Limit Line. Addressing an emergency press conference, Ministry spokesperson Kim Min-seok said North Korea fired about 500 shells and South Korea responded by firing K-9 self-propelled howitzer shells north of the Northern Limit Line.
North Korea began the offshore live-fire drill in the heavily militarized western sea a couple of hours after Pyongyang informed Seoul about this plan and issued a travel warning for boats to avoid the area.
The same day, China expressed worry about the escalating tension on the Korean peninsula. At a press briefing, Hong Lei, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, called on all parties to keep calm and avoid acts that threaten the peace and stability of the peninsula.
