(VOVworld) - British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday called for an early general election to be held on June 8. The call comes with Britain preparing for negotiations on leaving the EU.

May said Britain needs a general election before beginning detailed Brexit talks, and that holding this election is the only way to guarantee certainty and stability in the years ahead. A draft law paving the way for the election will be published Wednesday. Under the fixed-term parliament act, the date for the next election is set for 2020.
