(VOVworld) – Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus told NTV television on Thursday that Turkey will temporarily stop abiding by the European Convention on Human Rights after announcing a 3-month state of emergency, which may only last 45 days, following a failed military coup. Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said the state of emergency is to avert a possible second military coup.

A court in Alexandroupolis, Greece, sentenced 8 Turkish military officers who fled last week’s failed coup to suspended two-month prison terms. Turkey, who had urged Greece to extradite the officers to Turkey to be tried by a Turkish military court, said this case may harm bilateral relations between Turkey and Greece.
