Turkish workers strike over mining disaster
(VOVworld) – Four big trade unions in Turkey have called for strikes to protest the recent mine disaster in Soma, which killed at least 280 people and left 90 underground. The Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey said that those who pursued privatization policies threatened workers' lives to simply reduce costs.
Earlier, thousands of protesters clashed with police in the main cities of Istanbul and Ankara, blaming the government and the mining sector for causing the disaster.Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to investigate the cause of the incident but refused to admit government responsibility.
