UK calls for UN Security Council meeting on Myanmar

(VOVWORLD) - Britain has requested a Friday UN Security Council meeting on Myanmar. The UN Security Council issued a press statement on February 4 expressing “deep concern” over the military takeover in Myanmar and calling for the immediate release of Myanmar’s elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Last Friday, the UN General Assembly held an informal session chaired by its president Volkan Bozkir to discuss the Myanmar crisis. The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, who represents more than 50 UN member countries and eight regional organizations, made a speech, calling on the international community to work together to ease tensions in Myanmar.
