In an interview with NBC television, President Zelensky insisted that Russia must withdraw its troops before diplomatic talks can commence.

The Ukrainian leader conceded that the conflict is in a "difficult situation" and reiterated his need for more air defences to end Russia's control of the sky. Zelensky expressed concern that the West might reduce their aid to Ukraine over the next year.

In September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow is ready for talks which would take the situation on the ground and Russian security interests into account. He said that the longer Kiev delays talks with Moscow, the more difficult it will be to reach an agreement.
