(VOVWORLD) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called for COVID-19 vaccine production to be doubled and for fairer distribution of vaccines in the developing world.

According to the UN chief, many countries are experiencing shortages of the vaccine, especially India, worsening a dire second wave of infections that has hospitals and morgues overflowing. At the same time, the EU has reserved a surplus of the vaccines.
Guterres also mentioned the risks of coronavirus mutations and new variants as the virus spreads "like wildfire" in multiple areas of the developing world.
