Addressing the opening ceremony, Secretary-General António Guterres pointed out that most of the wealthier people in the world are already vaccinated, while over 90 percent of Africans are still waiting for their first dose. The UN wants vaccination against coronavirus to reach 70 percent by mid-2022.

The UN chief painted a grim picture of a divided, polarized world and urged solidarity among nations. He urged the United States and China to engage in dialogue, pointing out that the rift between the great powers is holding back the world’s efforts, including resolving problems in Myanmar, Guinea, and Afghanistan.

He said geopolitical divisions are undermining international cooperation and limiting the ability of the Security Council to make important decisions.
