UN spokesman Martin Nesirky has said UN inspectors returned to Syria on Wednesday to complete its investigation into "pending credible allegations" of chemical weapons use, but not to gather information about weapons sites. This is so that their mission will not overlap with that of the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which is verifying the evaluation and destruction of chemical weapons. Syria has completed procedures to enter the organization.

The Syrian conflict was high on the agenda of the ongoing 68th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. French President Francois Hollande urged "coercive" measures by the UN Security Council against Syria if it did not hand over its chemical weapons. Hollande told the meeting that a resolution being discussed by the major powers must "foresee coercive measures" under Chapter VII of the UN Charter and for those responsible for chemical weapon attacks in Syria to be "held accountable in the justice system."
