UN launches new campaign against organized crime
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has launched a new media campaign to raise the global community’s awareness of the threats posed by organized crime. The UNODC multimedia campaign highlights the huge amounts of money involved in organized criminal operations such as drugs and weapons trafficking, and cyber crime. The international crime syndicates pull in an estimated annual turnover of 870 billion dollars, equal to 1.5 percent of global GDP. Drug trafficking is by far the most lucrative trade for criminals, estimated at about 320 billion dollars per year. The campaign will start on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, and Google+, as well as on the website www.unodc.org/toc.
