(VOVWORLD) -The UN Security Council convened Monday after France called for an emergency meeting following Turkey’s launch of a military operation in northern Syria's Afrin province.

The closed-door meeting discussed the Syrian campaign in Idlib and Eastern Ghouta as well as the new Turkish offensive. The Security Council was already scheduled to hear a report from UN Aid Chief Mark Lowcock on his recent visit to Syria.
