At Thursday’s session of the UN Security Council on Syria, Mr. Mistura said any plan needs to focus on Syria’s conflicts which cannot be resolved through violence, only through political negotiations in line with Resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council. He said in the previous negotiations the UN achieved a common view among factions in Syria for a political transition and the future of Syria.
In another development, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has rejected US accusations that Syrian or Russian planes struck an aid convoy in Aleppo or that his troops were preventing food from entering the city’s rebel-held eastern neighborhoods, blaming the US for the collapse of a ceasefire many had hoped would bring relief to the war-ravaged country. In an interview on Wednesday in Damascus, Mr. Al-Assad said US airstrikes on Syrian troops last week were intentional, dismissing US officials’ statements that they were an accident. He called US lacked “the will” to join forces with Russia in fighting extremists.
The United Nations said it resumed humanitarian aid deliveries to war-torn Syria on Thursday after halting the convoys because of an attack that killed a worker of the International Committee of the Red Cross and several other non-combatants.
