(VOVWORLD) - UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that he welcomes efforts towards a peaceful and democratic transition in Algeria.
Algeria’s Constitutional Council on Wednesday officially accepted the resignation of 82-year-old president Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Speaker of Algeria's Upper House Abdelkader Bensalah was appointed interim President for a maximum of 90 days, while a presidential election is organized. Mr. Bensalah is not eligible to run for the election.
