U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other embassy staffs are confirmed to have died in Tuesday's conflict in the U.S. consulate building in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi. Al Jazeera TV reported that Stevens and the other US officials died being suffocated, possibly from the smoke-filled building that was lit on fire by the attackers. Hundreds of protesters broke into the U.S. consulate building in Benghazi and set ablaze the building.

State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the US government is working with the Libyans to secure the compound. French President Francois Hollande, NATO's secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and British defense minister Philip Hammond on Wednesday strongly condemned the killing and called on Libya to do everything to find those behind the attack and bring them to justice. Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti pledged to maintain support for Libyan authorities of the new democratic Libya.
