Jen Psaki, spokesperson for the US State Department, said on Tuesday that the US and Iran had agreed to help Iraq fight the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), following discussions between US Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns and Iranian representatives on the sidelines of nuclear talks in Vienna. Psaki said that Washington had opened the possibility of talks with Tehran about the Iraq crisis at low levels. She reiterated that the US had no plans for resuming diplomatic relations with Iran despite the fact that the UK had re-opened its embassy in Tehran.
Earlier John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesperson, said that the US had opened discussion with Iran about the crisis in Iraq, but had no plans for defense co-operation with the Islamic Republic. US Secretary of State John Kerry said that Washington could launch air-strikes and co-operate with Iran to resolve the crisis.
