US, EU, China agree at UK Summit to cooperate on AI safety
(VOVWORLD) - More than 25 countries, including the US, China, and the EU, signed the “Bletchley Declaration” at a summit in the UK on Wednesday, saying countries need to work together and establish a common approach on oversight.
Some tech executives and political leaders have warned that the rapid development of AI such as ChatGPT poses an existential threat to the world if not controlled. Addressing the event, Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of SpaceX, Tesla, and X (formerly known as Twitter) described AI as a threat to humanity if not carefully controlled.
“Here we are for the first time, really, in human history, with something that is going to be far more intelligent than us. It’s not clear to me if we can control such a thing, but I think we can aspire to guide it in a direction that’s beneficial to humanity. But I do think it’s one of the existential risks that we face and it is potentially the most pressing one if you look at the timescale and rate of advancement,” said Elon Musk.
Due to concerns about loss of control over AI, the UN last week established an advisory body dedicated to developing consensus on the risks posed by artificial intelligence. US President Joe Biden issued a wide-ranging executive order on Monday that aims to safeguard against threats posed by artificial intelligence. The order requires companies that develop AI systems that could pose a risk to national security, the economy, public health, or public safety to share safety testing results with the US government before releasing their AI system to the public.
