US House of Representatives votes to block Obama’s immigration order

(VOVworld) – The US House of Representatives, dominated by Republicans, voted Thursday to roll back President Barack Obama’s executive order on immigration. President Obama issued a veto threat immediately after the vote. The bill, which passed by a vote of 219-197, says the executive order President Obama issued in November that lets millions of unauthorized immigrants avoid deportation is void and with no legal effect.

The bill is part of the Republicans’ 3-step plan, which includes a budget plan for the 2015 fiscal year, to avoid a government shutdown. Conservative Republicans are putting pressure on the Obama administration to make concessions on immigration before the December 11th deadline of the government’s funding authority.

In a speech at the White House after the vote, President Obama condemned Republican lawmakers for “forcing talented young people” to leave the US. Obama called for comprehensive reform of the US immigration system, which he described as broken and outdated.
