(VOVWORLD) -The US and Japan commented on North Korea’s statement that it will hold the first summit with the South in late April, and is ready to talk with the US about denuclearization and the normalization of bilateral ties.

The statement was made after talks held in Pyongyang on Monday between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and special envoys of South Korean President Moon Jae In.
US President Donald Trump tweeted that the US will wait to see what happens. The Japanese government appeared bewildered by the decision to hold a summit. It had warned against easing pressure on North Korea because of an apparent diplomatic thaw with South Korea. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet decided on a response.
