(VOVworld) – US President Barack Obama praised the "historic step forward" of a democratic transfer of power to a civilian-led government in Myanmar.

During a phone call on Wednesday to congratulate President Htin Kyaw and underscore the US commitment to support the people and government of Myanmar as they work to achieve a more inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous future.

The same day, Obama spoke by phone with Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s new Foreign Minister and chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD).
