(VOVWORLD) - The US Department of Agriculture has recognized Vietnam’s food safety control system for catfish as equivalent to American regulations said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien at a press conference on Monday.
Vietnam’s food safety control system for catfish, mainly tra fish, is required to be equivalent to that of the US in three criteria in order to continue exports to the US. The criteria are meeting quality control and food hygiene requirements, law enforcement, and guaranteeing food safety and hygiene along the production chain from breeding and farming to transportation, processing, and export.
Nguyen Nhu Tiep, Director of the Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department, called the recognition a momentous step for Vietnam’s fishery sector.
"Vietnam can now access other markets and will increase the number of exporters of tra fish to the US from the current 13. Vietnam hopes to increase export turnover to the US," he said.
