(VOVWORLD) - The Biden administration announced new sanctions on Russia on Tuesday in response to the poisoning and jailing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The US has asked Russia to release Navalny.

The sanctions freeze assets in the US of high-ranking Russian officials. This first action by President Joe Biden's administration toward Russia is a sign that the new administration will treat Russia differently than the Trump administration did.
