(VOVWORLD) -The United States and Saudi Arabia on Sunday called on the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to continue negotiations to reach an agreement on extending the current ceasefire.

The ceasefire agreement expires on Monday. As supporters of the short-term humanitarian and ceasefire agreement, the US and Saudi Arabia believe that the extension will facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid that the Sudanese people need.
“While imperfect, an extension nonetheless will facilitate the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese people,” the Washington-Riyadh joint statement said on Sunday.
The army and RSF had agreed last week to the week-long truce brokered by the US and the Saudis. However, the ceasefire, like others before it, did not stop the fighting in the country.
The fighting that broke out on April 15 has left at least 730 civilians dead in Sudan.
