US supports a strong, independent, and prosperous Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam attaches great importance to relations with the United States and wishes to continue to develop an increasingly substantive, effective, long-term and stable Comprehensive Partnership for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday in Hanoi, Prime Minister Chinh suggested the two sides continue to strengthen cooperation within the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA), and consider the possibility of establishing a new economic-trade cooperation framework to promote harmonious and sustainable trade cooperation.

He said the Vietnamese Government is ready to create all favorable conditions for US businesses to do business in Vietnam and wants the US to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese businesses to invest in the US.

The Prime Minister suggested that the US increase the provision of scholarships for Vietnamese students and promote cooperation in science-high technology, focusing on medical and health sciences, especially the pharmaceutical industry, agricultural biotechnology, post-harvest technology, innovation and space cooperation for civilian purposes. He said he hopes the US would continue to cooperate with Vietnam in disease prevention and support COVID-19 vaccines in many flexible forms.

Vice President Harris said the United States supports a strong, independent, and prosperous Vietnam and is committed to promote stable and solid relations with Vietnam. Sharing Prime Minister Chinh’s opinions, Ms. Harris affirmed that the US will continue to provide substantive support for Vietnam to effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and future pandemic risks.

She announced that the US will continue to provide Vietnam with 1 million doses of Pfizer vaccine and will deliver it to Vietnam within the next 24 hours. The Vice President reiterated the US Government will continue to prioritize cooperation with Vietnam in economics-trade, climate change, science- technology, cooperation in civil space, and health care. The United States will continue to support Vietnam in overcoming war consequences, strengthening Vietnam-US cooperation in UN peacekeeping activities, and enhancing maritime security capabilities and development cooperation with Vietnam, she said.

At the meeting, the two leaders discussed global and regional situation, affirming the central role of ASEAN in the East Sea, Mekong and Myanmar issues and emphasizing the principle of respecting international law in cooperation and handling regional issues.
