Obama condemned a recent string of attacks by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) miliatants against Turkish security forces, and stressed the need for de-escalation.
The two leaders said the fight against terrorism would be among a number of topics on the agenda when US Vice President Joe Biden visits Turkey on Saturday.
