US warns Turkey of negative consequences of S-400 delivery
(VOVWORLD) - Turkey would face US sanctions if it completes the delivery of the Russian-made S-400 air defense system, the US State Department warned on Wednesday.
State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said at a press briefing that the consequences include suspension of the procurement and industrial participation in the F-35 fighter jets program, and potential sanctions from the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
US President Donald Trump on the same day spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on phone about the S-400 issue, the White House said in an earlier statement. During the phone call, President Erdogan reiterated Turkey's offer to set up a joint working group to address US concerns about Ankara's purchase of the S-400 air defense system.
