(VOVworld) – US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping have concluded their summit, saying that despite differences, both countries agreed to increase cooperation to build a new type of relations. At a joint media conference after the 2-day summit on June 7-8, President Obama said China’s continued success is beneficial to the US because a peaceful, stable and prosperous China is not only good for the Chinese people but also for the US and the world. Obama said he hoped that with a series of issues which were addressed candidly during the 2-day unofficial talks, both countries will build a new model of cooperation based on mutual respect and benefits.

President Xi said the summit in California mapped out direction for future Sino-US relations and a plan to develop bilateral ties. Xi said he and President Obama agreed that China and the US need work closely to address common challenges and difficulties. According to Xi, being the world’s largest economies, China and the US need cooperate to build a new type of relations based on "mutual respect" and "cooperation toward win-win results”. Both leaders reached consensus on expanding the exchange of visits at all levels, people-to-people exchanges and regular contacts as well as pushing for dialogues on strategies and economics. Both sides agreed to improve and strengthen military cooperation towards building a new model of military ties between the two countries.

For his part, Obama said both sides agreed to increase visits to boost cooperation in energy, environment, coordination in macro-economic policies, and joint address of non-traditional and trans-national challenges. Obama said cyber security is an increasingly important issue in bilateral ties, noting that working groups on cyber security established by both sides will meet for the first time in July. At the summit, the two leaders also discussed the Korean peninsula, Iran nuclear program, the Syrian crisis and security cooperation in Afghanistan after 2014.

President Xi invited President Obama to visit China for similar summit and committed to maintaining regular conversations with Obama.
