Maduro told reporters after his meeting with the UN chief in New York on Monday that a UN mission would go to Venezuela and Guyana to mediate. He said that the Geneva agreement in 1966 was the most appropriate foundation to resolve the dispute, insisting on Venezuela’s policy of resolving the dispute by diplomatic and peaceful means.
Last month, the Venezuelan Parliament passed a diplomatic strategy which claimed sovereignty over the Essequibo River, which has been disputed by Guyana. Earlier, Maduro signed a decree establishing a commission on delimiting the maritime borders with Venezuela’s neighbouring countries.
