(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked each family in Hanoi to grow at least one tree to make the capital city a leader in the nationwide tree planting drive.

Attending a tree planting festival in Hanoi on Monday, Mr. Phuc reiterated the policy of “not sacrificing the environment for economic gains,” affirming that the Government and localities are stepping up afforestation as well as forest development and protection, with a target of raising forest coverage to at least 42 percent by 2020.
“We need to develop all available resources for afforestation and apply advanced technology in forest planting and protection. Vietnam must become a leading exporter of wood and products made from planted wood within the next 10 years,” Mr. Phuc said.
In 1959, President Ho Chi Minh wrote an article underlining the significance of tree planting for each individual, each family and the entire nation. It has since become an annual Vietnamese custom each Lunar New Year.
