Vietnam: ASEAN supports non-proliferation and disarmament of WMD
(VOVWORLD) - The UN General Assembly’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security held its regular debate on Friday with the participation of Volkan Bozkir, President of the General Assembly, and Izumi Nakamitsu, Under‑Secretary‑General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs.

Speaking on behalf of the ASEAN, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of Vietnam’s mission to the UN, highlighted ASEAN’s concerns over the existence of nuclear weapons as well as the consequences of using such weapons. He added that Non‑Proliferation Treaty parties must recommit to its full implementation, and the Test‑Ban Treaty must achieve universal adherence. He emphasized on the importance of dialogues and negotiations to settle the nuclear issues on the Korean peninsula. ASEAN reiterated its commitment to a nuclear-free Southeast Asia, said Ambassador Quy.
