Vietnam attends int’l law development conference in Indonesia
(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam and 22 other countries and territories gathered at a conference on international law development in Asia, which was held in Indonesia this week by the Foundation for the Development of International Law in Asia (DILA), the Korea Maritime Institute, and the University of Indonesia.
Addressing the conference, Nguyen Ba Cuong of the Vietnam Institute of Seas and Islands underlined the role of international law in peace, security, and stability.
In the East Sea and other maritime areas around the world, international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), has created a legal order that promotes trade and use of sea areas in a peaceful, fair and effective manner, as well as activities to preserve biological resources and study and protect the marine environment, he said.
Cuong said that the UNCLOS is seen as a solid international legal basis for the definition and protection of Vietnam’s territorial waters and continental shelf along with the country’s legitimate rights and interests at sea.
