Vietnam attends UNSC online meeting on protecting civilians from conflict-induced hunger

(VOVWORLD) - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, on Tuesday called on the UN Security Council and UN agencies to make a greater effort to end the vicious cycle of conflicts and food insecurity, especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Ambassador Quy made a direct appeal during an online meeting of the Security Council to protect civilians from conflict-induced food shortages.

Besides honoring commitments to provide humanitarian aid and making efforts to secure peace and ensure long-term food security, the UN and the international community must cooperate in supporting countries in post-conflict recovery, improving people’s livelihoods, and maintaining food supplies, Quy said. He also argued for women’s full participation in peace and food security efforts.
David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Program, painted a grim picture of 135 million people already facing crisis levels of hunger coupled with an additional 130 million on the edge of starvation because of the coronavirus.
