(VOVWORLD) - An experimental COVID-19 vaccine is being tested on mice, the Company for Vaccine and Biological Production No.1 (VABIOTECH) said on Sunday.

Test results are due in the next 2 to 3 weeks to assess the vaccine’s safety and ability to produce antibodies against the novel coronavirus. The project is a collaboration between the Health Ministry’s VABIOTECH and the UK’s Bristol University.
“This is the first and the most important step - to evaluate whether antigens can produce immunity in an animal’s body. If we are successful at this stage, scientists will choose samples for further tests to assess safety and effectiveness,” said Dr. Do Tuan Dat, VABIOTECH’s Chairman.
This is the first time Vietnamese vaccine developers have used capital from a domestic investment fund. 70 to 80 vaccine developers around the world are conducting tests similar to Vietnam’s and 8 trials have already been carried out on humans.
Vietnam has reported no new COVID-19 cases in 18 consecutive days, according to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control. The country now has 271 confirmed cases, including 219 full recoveries and no deaths. Of the 52 patients still being treated, 21 have tested negative for the virus once or more.
