(VOVWORLD) - A workshop on improving the export capacity of Vietnam's mango industry took place on Monday in Dong Thap province.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam urged localities and businesses to boost the VietGap and GlobalGap standards and ensure preservation after harvest.
"Facilities are needed to support small and medium-sized processing and preservation establishments to ensure logistics from rural to urban areas. We pay close attention to mechanizing mango harvesting and preservation to reduce costs and increase profits. The standards we set for export also apply to domestic supermarkets," said Mr. Nam.
At the workshop, the MARD, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization in Vietnam, and Dong Thap and Ben Tre province signed a cooperation agreement on developing a fruit value chain in the Mekong Delta.
According to the MARD, the Mekong Delta region has more than 47,000 hectares of all kinds of mango, with an average yield of 11-13 tons per hectare. Only 1,700 hectares of mango are grown under the VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.
