(VOVWORLD) - Party and State leaders of Vietnam and Cambodia attended a ceremony in Hanoi on Friday to celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai addressed the event, "Despite ups and downs in the past 55 years, we are proud to see the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia have been continuously developed. Vietnam's consistent policy is to support a peaceful, neutral and developed Cambodia. The Vietnamese Party, State and people always value and give high priority to promoting comprehensive and sustainable cooperation with Cambodia."

In her speech, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An affirmed that the past 55 years marked an important development period in Vietnam-Cambodia relations when two countries supported each other to win independence from colonialism, defeat Pol Pot's brutal genocidal regime, and pursue re-construction and development.
"Prime Minister Techo Samdech Hunsen once said that hardship helps one identify one’s true friends. He said he will always value Vietnam’s support for Cambodia in its most difficult time. On this occasion, I’d like to express my deep gratitude for great support, which helped turn Cambodia, a war torn country, into a nation of unity, peace, and development," said Deputy PM Men Sam An.
