Vietnam celebrates 40 years of UN membership

(VOVWORLD) - A ceremony to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Vietnam’s membership to the UN took place in Hanoi on Tuesday.

Addressing the event, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said Vietnam’s membership marked the UN’s recognition of Vietnam’s independence, freedom, and unity.

PM Phuc said: “Over the past 40 years, Vietnam has been proud to be a responsible member of the UN. Vietnam always makes efforts to contribute to peace, security, economic development, and human rights. The Vietnam-UN development cooperation framework is a successful model”.

Mr. Phuc praised Vietnam’s role in promoting solidarity and creativity to overcome challenges, develop sustainably, and bring people happiness and prosperity. He said peace and stability are key to achieve development goal, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

"Vietnam strongly agrees with the UN General Secretary that 2017 is the year of peace. We hope the UN will continue to uphold its role in maintaining peace, international security, and preventing or resolving conflicts by peaceful means on the basis of the UN Charter and international law,” Mr. Phuc added.

PM Phuc said effectively strengthening cooperation with the UN is always a top priority in Vietnam’s diplomatic and international integration policies. He said Vietnam hopes to receive support from the international community to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 term.

UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Kamal Malhotra said the UN will continue to support Vietnam to implement the 2030 agenda.

PM Phuc and Mr. Malhotra cut a ribbon to launch a photo exhibition on the 40th anniversary of Vietnam-UN relations.
