As a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2020-2021 term, Vietnam vows to be an active and responsible member of the UNSC. Mr. Trung said that having gone through numerous challenges and wars, Vietnam wants to maintain peace and prevent war or conflict. Vietnam's stance on major international issues related to peacekeeping is in accordance with international law. Its foreign policy values peace, independence, self-reliance, cooperation, and development.
Deputy Foreign Minister Trung told a press conference in Hanoi on Thursday: “Vietnam supports issues that the international community is concerned about. Vietnam will be a mediator in matters consistent with our interests, abilities, and conditions. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Vietnam wants to promote the role of the Council in maintaining international peace and security, preventing conflicts and crises. Another priority is to contribute to improving the efficiency of the Council, hence, better performing their duties and addressing problems that Asia-Pacific countries are concerned about, including protecting civilians in armed conflicts and post-conflict reconstruction.”
Vietnam was a non-permanent Security Council member for the 2008-2009 term. Mr. Trung said Vietnam is ready to become a non-permanent member of the UNSC again for the 2020-2021 term, starting next month.
