Mr. Tac made the statement prior to the 58th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO, which opened on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland. The event is being hosted by Ambassador Duong Chi Dung, head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the UN, the World Trade Organization, and other international organizations in Geneva.

Vietnam holds the chairmanship of the WIPO General Assembly for the first time for the 2018-2019 term. Mr. Tac said Ambassador Dung’s chairing of the meetings shows Vietnam’s commitment to WIPO activities.

Addressing the opening ceremony, WIPO Director General Francis Gurry said intellectual property has become more important to the economy and to society, as well as to the development of international trade and policies. He said governments, businesses, and media are concerned about intellectual property rights in their innovation and industrialization strategies.

The meetings, scheduled to run until October 2, will involve 1,200 delegates from the 191 WIPO members and focus on proposals and high-level negotiations regarding intellectual property law.
