Vietnam was nominated by the Asia-Pacific UN members as their only candidate to fill the seat for the next 2 years.  Vietnam was a non-permanent member of the UNSC in the 2008-2009 term and President of the UNSC during this period.   In order to win a seat in the coming vote, Vietnam needs two-thirds of the votes from 193 UN members. This is the second time Vietnam has been a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC.

Head of the Swedish mission at the United Nations Olof Skoog said Vietnam is in an “excellent” position to become a non-permanent member of the UNSC. Head of the Japanese delegation to the UN Koro Bessho also expressed his belief that Vietnam will have a high chance to win the election.
