(VOVWORLD) - Deputy Defense Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh talked with his Japanese counterpart Nishida Yasunori by phone on Wednesday to promote bilateral defense cooperation once the COVID-19 pandemic is under control.

The two leaders briefed each other on disease prevention measures and discussed current regional and global issues.
According to Mr. Yasunori, Japan resolutely opposes recent actions that have provoked tensions and complicated the situation in the East Sea.
Mr. Vinh reported that the ASEAN Defense Senior Officials agreed last month, ASEAN members agreed last month that, despite the COVID-19 epidemic, the international community cannot ignore cyber security challenges, environmental security challenges, terrorism, or piracy, and must ensure that countries do not act unilaterally, do not militarize, and do maintain peace and stability by respecting international law. Vietnam’s consistent stance is that disputes and disagreements should be resolved without violence on the basis of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) and regional treaties.
