(VOVworld) – Vietnam joined the second annual Deccan Herald Dialogue in New Delhi on Saturday, with the theme being “The Asia-Pacific Century: India and Big Power Engagement”. In his speech, Vietnamese Ambassador to India Ton Sinh Thanh said as the East Asia Summit marked its 10th anniversary, tensions in the East Sea emerged as a key security challenge that could hinder a dream of a Asia Pacific community. He said peace and stability in the Southeast Asia, especially in the East Sea, is inevitable to peace and stability in the Indian Ocean and Asia-Pacific. He voiced his concerns over on-going complicated developments in the East Sea as China’s construction of artificial islands in the East Sea is taking place on a largest scale ever, and is worsening the situation there. He called on involved parties to strictly abide by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea to ensure peace, navigation security and freedom in the East Sea and reiterated that Vietnam will try its best to make the East Sea a place for peace, stability, and cooperation for development, and will settle disputes via peaceful measures and in accordance with international law.
Many analysts agreed that East Sea issue has become one of the region’s biggest security challenges, calling for increased cooperation among nations. They highlighted the importance of involved parties in the East Sea joining negotiations to reach a Code of Conduct in the East Sea which is of great significance to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
