Vietnam opposes to China’s Sansha city election

(VOVworld) – More than 1,100 voters in 15 constituencies on three archipelagoes -  Zhongsa, Xisha, and Nansha - cast ballots yesterday to elect deputies to their first term in the Municipal People’s Council of Sansha city, China National Radio (CNR) has reported.

This election violates Vietnam’s sovereignty over two of the archipelagoes. The National Border Committee of Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared many times that Vietnam has sufficient legal and historical evidence to assert its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Xisha) and Truong Sa (Nansha) archipelagos. In response to China’s decision on June 23 to establish Sansha city, authorities of Khanh Hoa province and Da Nang city protested this wrongful and illegal act that could damage the two peoples’ friendship. China’s Sansha city election came just a day after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei affirmed China’s readiness to implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and work with ASEAN to finalize the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
